A Lynn man received a 27-month prison sentence today, following his involvement in a large-scale drug trafficking operation that pumped out tens of thousands of fake prescription pills laced with narcotics on the North Shore. The 25-year-old Melvin Nieves also faces three years of supervised release, as announced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV.
Nieves, arrested with a suitcase stuffed with $30,000 in cash, was caught transporting drug proceeds at Logan Airport in October of last year. Intending to journey to California for purchasing more controlled substances, Nieves flaunted an additional $8,054 on his person, alongside assorted jewelry and a Louis Vuitton bag - rewards of his illicit trade, according the U.S. Attorney's Office.
He pleaded guilty in October 2023 to a charge of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances. This plea came after a wide-ranging indictment in December 2022, which swept up 25 individuals associated with the distribution of counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl and fake Adderall pills packed with methamphetamine, with Nieves being the second to be sentenced.
The 25-year-old was caught in a trap sprung by various local police departments and the Drug Enforcement Administration after distributing about 400 counterfeit oxycodone pills. According to Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy, "Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, New England Division," and the Interim Colonel of the Massachusetts State Police, their joint aim was to dismantle DTOs posing a threat to communities.
The case was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces operation, designed to disrupt and dismantle top-tier criminal organizations through a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach. While the details contained in the indictment are merely allegations, those remaining defendants have yet to have their day in court, where they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
