A near-tragic turn of events off the coast of Tenant's Harbor, Maine, resolved in a dramatic rescue Sunday as local lobstermen and first responders teamed up to save a man whose small craft had capsized. The victim, who had been checking on storm damage to property, failed to meet his scheduled check-in, sparking a search effort that his family alerted the authorities to around 5 p.m., as night fell and temperatures plunged, according to CBS News.
The soggy and distressed mariner was discovered clinging to life on Northern Island, after his calls for aid were heard by a local citizen, who then informed search teams. Given the several islands studding the area, pinpointing his exact location had posed a significant challenge. Lobstermen, overhearing rescue communications, decided to stay in the vicinity—a decision hailed as life-saving by St. George Fire and Rescue in a Facebook post statement, saying "Our local lobstermen saved his life."
Once located by crews and the willing lobstermen, the victim was conscious but immobilized, stranded on the island's shore. In a concerted rescue effort, the Maine Marine Patrol, alongside other departments and the fisherman, facilitated the man's extraction from the island. As WGME reported that after being brought ashore in Tenants Harbor, an ambulance promptly transported him to a local hospital for treatment of his low body temperature and other undisclosed conditions.
As more than two dozen first responders attended the scene, some were shuttled off the island by a lobsterman, exemplifying the vital role the local maritime community played in the operation. St. George Fire and Rescue, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the uncertainty that follows, reminded the public to keep the rescued man and his family in their thoughts, expressing the sentiment that "While tonight's outcome feels like a victory, we do not know at this time what the future holds for our patient," in a statement obtained by CBS affiliate WGME. As of their latest reports, there have been no further updates on the man's condition.
