San Antonio drivers, brace yourselves for a chaotic weekend of detours and delays. According to KENS 5, the I-10 and Loop 1604 interchange near the Rim will be completely shut down starting 9 p.m. tomorrow, January 26, due to the Loop 1604 expansion project. Extending through to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, the road closure promises a tough navigation for locals as long as the weather cooperates. Law enforcement positioned to direct traffic, drivers are advised to expect significant delays if they are in the area this weekend.
Travelers will be diverted onto service roads, as the main lanes on I-10 eastbound/westbound from UTSA Blvd. to La Cantera Parkway, along with Loop 1604 eastbound/westbound from Vance Jackson Rd. to La Cantera Parkway, will not be accessible. Traffic on Loop 1604 drivers starting at Vance Jackson and going through La Cantera Parkway will find themselves at a standstill with the highway closure. Fox San Antonio has a comprehensive detour plan to redirect this turmoil.
Fox San Antonio provided detailed detour routes for the affected roadways. The I-10 Eastbound Mainlanes Detour directs drivers to exit the mainlanes after La Cantera Parkway and to follow the I-10 Eastbound frontage road through the interchange, eventually re-entering the mainlanes at the ramp after the Loop 1604 interchange. Westbound traffic on I-10 will similarly exit after UTSA Boulevard and snake along the frontage road, rejoining the mainlanes post interchange.
For drivers on the Loop 1604 Eastbound Mainlanes, a detour will commence at the Vance Jackson Road exit ramp, funneling them onto the frontage road and nudging them towards the signs for I-10 Eastbound. A U-turn at UTSA Boulevard will have the traffic flow merging back on the I-10 Westbound frontage road and then to the Loop 1604 Eastbound mainlanes entrance ramp at Vance Jackson Road. Conversely, Loop 1604 Westbound Mainlanes and Frontage Road Detour specifics were not immediately available, but the intention to guide traffic was made clear.
The construction is part of the broader Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, a monumental effort to enhance traffic flow and safety in a rapidly growing part of San Antonio.
