San Antonio erupted in chaos yesterday, when a man barricaded himself in his apartment and unleashed a barrage of gunfire that had police scrambling to a West Side complex and ending in an officer-involved shooting. The man, identified as Jose T. Vazquez, 43, now faces a hefty $300,000 bond, as reported by FOX San Antonio.
Responding to multiple 911 calls just around 2 a.m., officers were met with gunfire upon arrival at the Timbercreek Apartments, with bullets flying straight at their patrol cars from Vazquez's firearm. SWAT teams, reinforcements for securing the perimeter, and evacuation efforts were rapidly called in, San Antonio police shared.
The standoff reached a peak when the suspect, gunning from a first-floor apartment, was shot amid the crossfire, as an officer took the shot that ultimately subdued him. Vazquez was subsequently hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and in a turn of luck, no officers or residents were harmed, despite the suspect firing dozens of rounds indoors and out, terrorizing neighbors, police stated. This detail was corroborated by News 4 San Antonio, which also noted how San Antonio Police Chief William McManus described the scene where rounds penetrated apartment walls causing fear among residents.
The police officer who engaged Vazquez, a 23-year veteran of the force, was placed on administrative duty following the incident, the department confirmed. In the meantime, the investigation into the shootout and the motives behind Vazquez's action continues to unfold.
