A 49-year-old man was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting early Sunday in the North Lawndale neighborhood. The incident occurred in the 600 block of South Washtenaw Avenue just after 6 a.m. when a vehicle reportedly approached the man as he stood outside. NBC Chicago reported that the assailants fired multiple shots, fatally wounding the victim.
The gunfire resulted in the man sustaining multiple bullet wounds. After the attack, he was quickly taken to an area hospital, where, despite efforts to save his life, he was pronounced dead a short time after his arrival. As of now, the shooters remain at large, no suspects are in custody, and, the search for them continues, according again to NBC Chicago.
Simultaneously, another article from WGN-TV detailed that the shooting took place in the Garfield Park neighborhood, a close community within the West Side of Chicago. This area has been grappling with violence, that sadly echoes in too many Chicago streets.
The identity of the victim has yet to be released pending family notification. Area Four detectives have taken up the case, intensively searching for leads, and information to help track down the offenders. Police urge anyone with information to come forward and contact the authorities, in the hopes that justice can be served for the victim and his community.
