A man was struck and killed by a MBTA commuter rail train near Hyde Park Station on Tuesday evening, officials have confirmed. According to Transit Police, the man was carrying a suitcase and was trespassing on the right of way when he attempted to cross from one track to another and was hit by an outbound train. The tragic incident occurred around 3 p.m., as per WHDH.
Trying to make it over a fence separating the tracks, he was pronounced dead on the scene, officials said. During what would have been the evening rush hour, the collision prompted more than an hour's delay, according to Boston 25 News. Transit Police detectives are actively investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident, but as of now, foul play is not suspected.
Travelers were advised that "All Franklin/Foxboro Line & Providence/Stoughton Line trains will temporarily bypass Back Bay, Ruggles, Forest Hills & Hyde Park due to police activity," as stated by MBTA officials in a statement obtained by Boston 25 News. Commuters affected by the delay were urged to consider alternatives, including the Orange Line or Worcester/Needham Line connections.
Following the accident, "On behalf of the TPD and the entire MBTA organization we offer our most sincere condolences to the decedent’s family, loved ones, and friends," officials said, in a statement obtained by Boston 25 News. Holding a suitcase while the man was attempting to get over the fence, the victim's identity has not yet been released pending notification of his family, as per the ongoing investigation.
Substantial delays on the Providence/Stoughton Line and the Franklin/Foxboro Line were expected as a result of the accident, as reported by NBC Boston. Yet, the exact impact of those delays on evening commuters was not specifically detailed, as this remains a developing story. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
