McDonald's Re-launches Double Big Mac NationwideSource: mcdonalds.com

McDonald's is beefing up its menu with the return of a heavy hitter: the Double Big Mac. Fans of the fast-food giant have reason to celebrate as the four-patty behemoth makes its grand return stateside on January 24, after a four-year hiatus. For those looking to indulge, the piled-high sandwich will be available on the U.S. menu for a limited time.

First introduced briefly in a pre-pandemic world back in March 2020, the Double Big Mac was ultimately sidelined as McDonald's streamlined its offerings. According to a report by Men's Journal, the extra meaty version of McDonald's classic features four 100% beef patties, layered with extra sauce and pickles, all on a sesame seed bun. Despite its instant success, the chain's shift to smaller menus during the pandemic means the returning burger is likely to grab even bigger attention this time around.

While health-conscious diners might balk at the Double Big Mac's caloric content—740 calories as per Men's Journal—the chain is banking on America's love for supersized eats. The fast-food giant has yet to announce how long this oversized item will stay on the menu. The Little Mac, a downsized version, will not be returning with its larger sibling this round.

The Big Mac has been an American icon since 1968, with its creator Jim Delligatti having introduced it in a Uniontown, Pennsylvania, restaurant a year prior. To maintain the legacy of quality in their signature offering, McDonald's announced a revamp of its burgers in April 2023, including softer buns and more Secret Sauce. "Though he’s no longer with us, we know his legacy will live on with the Big Mac sandwich," Jim's son Michael Delligatti told ABC15. "He knew customers wanted a bigger burger, so he spent weeks developing the new burger, experimenting with different buns and creating the Special Sauce."
