In a recent Miami commissioners meeting, embattled City Commissioner Joe Carollo delivered an impassioned defense against the seizure of his assets by the U.S. Marshals following a federal court order. The dramatic turn of events is rooted in a multimillion-dollar civil lawsuit which ruled against the commissioner last June.
Amid voices of public comment, Carollo seized the moment to express his discontent, declaring, "I’m fed up with the lies, the defamation, the slander, the corruptness, yes, that is coming from different angles here," according to WSVN. The lawsuit originated from grievances filed by William Fuller and Martin Pinilla, owners of the Little Havana entertainment hotspot Ball & Chain, who alleged Carollo used his position to harass them for not supporting his political endeavors.
A federal jury found Carollo responsible for this targeted abuse, resulting in a staggering $63.5 million judgment against him. Now, his assets, including his $3 million Coconut Grove home and additional properties, are on the line to satisfy the debt. "They could put me on the streets if they want to and bring my tent. But they’re not going to shut me up," Carollo avowed during the meeting, in words captured by WSVN.
Execution efforts are proceeding, despite a statement issued by Carollo's attorney affirming their belief that the judgment will be overturned and suggesting that asset seizure should await this potential reversal, as reported by WSVN. The Ball & Chain's attorney, Jeff Gutchess, stated to the news outlet, “We believe he has additional properties in Miami that, we will seek to seize those as well, and then we’ll continue to garnish his wages.”
Meanwhile, the latest development outlined by a writ of execution demands the U.S. Marshal's Office to confiscate Carollo's assets to cover the court-ordered payment to Fuller and Pinilla; which CBS Miami reports breaks down to $34.3 million with interest to Fuller and $29.2 million with interest to Pinilla. The directive includes Carollo's cash, goods, and properties. As these events unfold, the once-powerful commissioner now stands at a crucible, his future dictated by the hands of justice and the wheels of legal retribution inexorably turning.
