Southwest Miami-Dade has become the scene of a crime that has local horse owners on high alert. Police are digging deep into an investigation after two horses were reportedly stolen and then found slaughtered in a rural stretch of Miami-Dade County. The grim find was made earlier today in the 20600 block of Southwest 168th Street, where police tape cordoned off a patch of grass beside a dirt road—the final resting place of the stolen equines. With the perpetrators still at large, officials at the Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed to NBC Miami that the search for answers is ongoing.
Add to this tragedy the words of a bereaved horse owner, David Bradley, who has to now regretfully bear the loss of his beloved creatures, Sammy and War on the Home Front. "For somebody to have the stomach to do something like this, this is heartless," he told WSVN. The stolen horses were taken straight from their stalls on Bradley's property off Southwest 207th Avenue in an overnight heist. "We noticed that the fence was cut, and that point we realized that they were taken," Bradley added.
The stolen horses were discovered not far from their home, near a canal off Southwest 205th Avenue, just blocks from the barn—evidence of a crime both shocking and sorrowful. Bradley, grappling with his family's anguish, described the horses as their children, "abducted and killed for meat." His statement underscores a community's shock at such callousness toward animals often considered part of the family.
Miami-Dade Police detective Alvaro Zabaleta conveyed the urgency of the situation. "Both horses were slaughtered sometime over the weekend," he explained. Miami-Dade Police are now earnestly trying to track down those responsible and are asking for the community's help. "We need to come together, help out the detectives in this investigation. Let's give some closure to the family, and of course, put behind bars these individuals that would do such a heinous crime," Zabaleta said in a statement.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to step forward and contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Tips can be given anonymously, and individuals may even be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000. As this investigation unfolds, the community hopes for justice and measures to prevent such tragic events from ever repeating.
