Miami-Dade police are gearing up for this weekend's "Wheels Up, Guns Down" event, with law enforcement bracing for an influx of ATV, dirt bike riders and cyclists on the roads. The annual demonstration, which takes place over Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, has been known for participants engaging in reckless driving and sometimes shutting down highways. In an underscored message to the public, Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels made it clear: “Participating in such activities will result in police action, including arrests, citations, and your vehicle being impounded,” as reported by Local 10 News.
Additional forces, including the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), are joining Miami-Dade police to a monitor event. FHP has noticed an increase in bicyclists attempting to take over roadways during previous demonstrations, which is illegal. “Traffic will be monitored in real-time, individuals or groups interfering with motorists will be reported to troopers on patrol,” stated FHP Lt. Alex Camacho. In preparation, authorities are reminding everyone that ATVs and dirt bikes are not permitted on highways, public roads, or streets and are pushing a no-tolerance policy this year.
The demonstration, a bid to promote non-violence, ironically comes at the cost of traffic peace, posing a stark contrast to the very values it aims to highlight. Last year, Miami-Dade county reported 154 traffic fatalities, a staggering number that has propelled law enforcement agencies to caution against reckless participation. This stern warning also extends to the general concept of traffic safety as law enforcement agencies, like Miami-Dade police, stress the importance of adherence to road rules and regulations.
While the "Wheels Up, Guns Down" event is rooted in advocating for an end to gun violence, the call for safety extends beyond the singular act of laying down arms to encompass the broader scope of public behavior and responsibility. Law enforcement emphasizes that the safety of participants and the public remains a paramount concern. As preparations continue, the message from authorities remains unwavering, a sentiment echoed by Miami-Dade law enforcement agencies, as noted by CBS News Miami in their efforts to ensure that everyone stays safe and follows the rules ahead of the demonstration.
