A Miami-Dade Police Department officer was hospitalized early Friday morning after a significant crash on Interstate 95. Traveling northbound near Ives Dairy Road, the officer, whose name has yet to be released, lost control of the patrol car and collided with a tree, as reported by NBC Miami.
The injured officer, said to be in stable condition, was rushed to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Witnessed by a heavy presence of police and first responders, the patrol car's damage was severe, with the driver's side completely smashed. According to the video from the scene, the downed officer could be seen raising his right arm, cooperating with the medical team as they conducted their assessment. Following the incident, the I-95 northbound on-ramp was temporarily closed, but traffic has resumed as normal after reopening.
7News captured footage of the aftermath, showing the damaged cruiser and rescue crews attending to the officer. It was reported that the police vehicle was the only one involved in the crash, having sustained substantial damage particularly to the car's rear end. The mishap caused a shutdown of traffic in the area, creating a bottleneck for the morning commuters until the scene was cleared.
As of yet, officials have not released further details on the cause of the accident nor the full extent of the police officer's injuries. The Miami-Dade Police Department is likely conducting an internal review to understand the sequence of events that led to this single-vehicle crash. Interested bystanders gathered at the perimeter, the crash site became a temporary spectacle until the area was cleared, and the normal rhythm of I-95 took back its reign. Updates are expected as the investigation continues.
