A one-year-old girl is fighting for her life in a coma following a near-drowning incident in a Miami Gardens canal on Saturday. According to NBC6, the toddler was part of an outdoor gathering when she reportedly wandered off and ended up in the treacherous waters. Police enclosed the area near Northwest 203rd Terrace to investigate, while the shaken family members were questioned.
Well-meaning neighbors discovered the child afloat in the canal, soon after she had vanishingly slipped away from the gathering. The one-year-old was immediately transported to Jackson North Medical Center, as Miami Gardens police confirmed that she remains in a coma, with her condition hanging by a thread. Distressing footage seen by NBC6 showed officers securing the scene and talking to distressed relatives and onlookers.
The apartment complex manager, Arty Velez, gave a harrowing account of the event to WSVN, stating, "[I was told] that she's in the hospital, and she's not doing that good." He detailed how residents had come together for a social event, from which the little girl went missing, leading to the tragic discovery in the canal. Responding officers and rescue crews cooperated swiftly to provide aid to the child, who was found still with a pulse, as per the family's report.
