According to CBS Miami, Heat President Pat Riley praised the decision, saying, "Dwyane's legacy is a towering one not only for the Miami HEAT but for Miami-Wade County. I can't think of a better way to honor him than by memorializing that legacy."
The full-scale statue is the brainchild of sculptors Omri Amrany and Oscar León from Fine Art Studio Rotblatt Amrany. Riley has been eager to forever celebrate Wade's contributions to the team, and with this statue, fans will soon be able to admire a likeness of the Hall of Famer who helped bring three NBA Championships to the city. Amrany and León are known for their sports sculptures, including the "Michael Jordan Spirit" in Chicago, and they are set to carefully capture Wade's essence as they did with other NBA greats. "We are honored and excited to capture the essence of Dwyane Wade," they said in a statement obtained by CBS Miami.
Wade, who retired after the 2018-19 NBA season, is widely recognized as the Heat's all-time leader in points, assists, steals, games, and minutes played. During his 16-year career, 15 of those spent with the Miami Heat, Wade not only collected individual accolades such as the NBA Finals MVP in 2006 and 13 All-Star selections, but also etched his name into the hearts of the Miami faithful.
Revered by the local fan base, Wade expressed his bond with the city during a previous ceremony. "From 21 years old 'til 37, I grew up here. A lot of the fan base, they grew up with me. ... There's no love like Miami love, and every time I come back here I feel that," Wade told ABC News. The team's decision to erect a statue in his honor underscores this mutual affection, and fans are certainly to eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the tribute to the player who once electrified the Kaseya Center.
In addition to Wade's commemoration, the Heat will retire teammate Udonis Haslem's No. 40 jersey in their next home game against the Brooklyn Nets.
