A Miami woman has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder following a deadly shootout at an apartment building that claimed the life of a man and left two others wounded last week, law enforcement said.
Yanais Almeida, 35, was taken into custody on Monday and is currently behind bars at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to Local 10 News. The incident unfolded around 6 a.m. on January 25, in the 4200 block of Northwest South Tamiami Drive, where Stefan Iglesias was found dead from a gunshot wound to the neck.
NBC Miami reported that Iglesias was discovered in a pool of blood with a firearm nearby. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Shortly after, Almeida along with another suspect arrived at Coral Gables Hospital with gunshot wounds.
Both injured parties were later transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, treated, and released. Surveillance footage indicates that Iglesias was entering a parking lot accompanied by Almeida when he pulled out a weapon and fired shots at another hospitalized suspect. A different suspect appeared and began shooting at Iglesias, who was fatally hit and collapsed, as stated in an arrest report.
During her court appearance on Tuesday, it was revealed that Almeida allegedly lured the victim to the location under the guise of a marijuana transaction, with the plan for the other suspects to rob him. Nonetheless, police have yet to identify the other suspects or disclose whether they will be facing charges. "My friend called me this morning, and said there was a body outside of her room," a man recounted the grim discovery to Annaliese Garcia of Local 10 last week.
The investigation into the shooting's motive is ongoing, with Miami police Officer Kiara Delva informing Local 10 that preliminary findings suggest this shooting may have happened in the rear parking lot of the location. Almeida's arrest report has been requested by Local 10 News, but details surrounding a possible motive remain unclear. The case is developing as authorities continue their probe into the tragic events that left a man dead.
