In a move to get more tails wagging with families, Minneapolis Animal Care & Control (MACC) is slashing pet adoption fees. The shelter, grappling with overflow since reaching its max capacity, invites locals to become pet owners at zero cost, sans the mandatory licensing fee. According to a recent announcement, this discount also extends to non-residents, who can now scoop up an adult dog for $100 or a feline friend for just $25. Although the fee for puppies remains a steady $250 for everyone.
In an effort to keep up with the shelter's intake, MACC's animal shelter supervisor, Danielle Joerger, encouraged Minneapolis residents in a statement, "We want to make sure Minneapolis residents know they can now adopt a cat or dog without an adoption fee at our shelter, and that we have lowered the fees for non-residents as well." The shelter, located at 212 17th Ave. N., will be opening its doors wide for potential pet adopters on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 1 p.m.-7 p.m. and on Friday, Jan. 19 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Bracing for the seasonal chills, the shelter is conjuring up warmth for prospective pet parents. MACC, caught in the harsh winter embrace, intends to shepherd visitors safely into its premises. Joerger told the City about their strategy, "We have limited space in our shelter lobby. We will be taking names and phone numbers to text people as they will need to wait in their car to stay warm until we can accommodate them in the building."
More than just adopting out pets, MACC's mission includes maintaining pet and human safety in Minneapolis through responsible animal care. Two vets, three vet techs, four animal care techs, and a dozen animal control officers fill the squad, tackling everything from rescuing animals in distress to cracking down on wildlife lawbreakers. In addition to this dedicated staff, helpful volunteers clocked in over 7,000 hours last year to lend a hand around the shelter.
