Minneapolis celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a series of events designed to pay homage to the civil rights leader's enduring legacy. Residents gathered at the MLK Recreation Center on January 15 for an evening filled with stirring performances and insightful speeches, marking an annual tribute to Dr. King, as reported by FOX 9.
Community engagement was a touchstone of the celebration, with attendees like Cordell Wiseman reflecting on the significance of the holiday. "MLK holiday means so much to minorities… a Christmas type holiday is where it belongs… what he did, it freed society," Wiseman said, as per FOX 9.
The event also honored Walter “Q Bear” Banks Jr., a notable DJ and Operations Manager at 89.9 KMOJ, with the 2024 Living the Dream Award. As musical notes hung in the air, attendees enjoyed performances by NUNNABOVE, a local band of siblings who've carved out a place in the Twin Cities musical landscape. Chad Jackson, a figure from the Minnesota Twins organization and a youth community leader, served as the event's emcee, guiding a program filled with inspiration, according to Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.
The MLK Day celebrations extended beyond the central event, encompassing food drives and activities across the city's parks and recreation centers. "Feeding the Dream" Food Drive, now in its 14th year, collected non-perishable items for local nonprofits YouthLink and Avenues for Youth.
