Ice, kites, and winter excitement come together this Saturday at the 22nd annual Minneapolis Winter Kite Festival, taking place at Lake Harriet from 12-4 pm. According to an announcement on the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's website, the festival will feature a plenitude of kites soaring overhead, as well as a kid’s DJ, s’mores, hikes, and yard games to keep attendees of all ages entertained.
For those ready to embrace the icy conditions, organizers have advised the public to "consider wearing ice cleats/snow grippers or boots/shoes with abrasive soles for additional traction." They've also shared a tip for safely navigating the slick surface: "Remember when you're on ice it's safest to walk like a penguin – short shuffling steps with feet shoulder-width apart while keeping your hands out of your pockets."
Getting to the event should be a breeze with free shuttles set to run between the Executive Building parking lot on the west side of Bde Maka Ska (3033 Excelsior Blvd.) and Lake Harriet, as stated on the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's website. The shuttles are set to operate from 11 am to 5 pm, providing a hassle-free way for visitors to commute to and from the festival grounds.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Minnesota Kite Society will be demonstrating their aerial artistry and sharing their knacks with aspiring kite flyers. Festival-goers can even purchase their own kites at the event if they don’t have one to bring. As disclosed in messaging from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, it's an opportunity to "Bring your own kite or buy one at the lake."
