In a play that's in line with the ballgame of relocations, the Mississippi Braves, the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, are hitting a home run straight into Columbus, Georgia for the 2025 season.
The Mississippi Braves have been swinging bats in Pearl since 2005, when they scooped up their gloves from Greenville, South Carolina, over the past nearly two decades, they have seen their highs with two league titles and three division ones, and their players have often stepped up to the major leagues plate, including in their latest championship run in 2021. A double-edged sword of sorts, the 2024 season will mark their 20th, and simultaneously final, inning at Trustmark Park, aptly set to begin on April 9 against Biloxi, reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Fans were assured by the franchise that the relocation isn't a strikeout for professional baseball in Pearl, noting that the organization is open to pitching in to bring another team to Trustmark Park in the future. "To our incredible fans – 2024 will be the M-Braves' final season in Pearl, MS," the franchise's statement read, "We have loved creating memories with you at Trustmark Park, and we look forward to bringing you an amazing 2024 season," as stated by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Behind the scenes, Diamond Baseball Holdings, which bought the team from Liberty Media in 2022, appears to be steering their ship towards consolidation of Braves affiliations within Georgia borders; they own not just the Mississippi Braves but also the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers and the High-A Rome Emperors, which leaves unanswered questions on whether the Mississippi Braves will undergo a name change amidst its affiliates' recent rebranding sprees—such as the Rome Braves becoming the Rome Emperors, as per FOX 5 Atlanta.
