On January 6th, a car thief's escapade came to an abrupt halt in Naperville after police apprehended the suspect, following a tense standoff in a local apartment. Law enforcement officers initially found the stolen vehicle at around 4:26 a.m. in a parking lot on the 1600 block of Country Lakes Drive
When authorities attempted contact, the suspect bolted to a nearby apartment, where he holed up and refused to depart despite the residents' demands to leave, this harrying turn of events forced out the occupants and left the perp cornered. The Naperville Police Department, armed with their Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiators, swept in to resolve the situation, and after several hours, the suspect gave up peacefully.
According to a press release from the Naperville Police Department, the suspect is identified as Jonathan P. Awad, 20, of Hanover Park, and faces a slew of charges including a Class 2 felony for motor vehicle theft, other felonies for trespassing and unlawful weapon use, and a misdemeanor for resisting arrest.
The local community is on edge, but the Police Department reminds us that "a charge is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty".
