Residents of Needham, Massachusetts, have been instructed by local police to avoid using the town's mailboxes due to a spate of mail theft incidents, as per reports on Monday. The Needham Police Department has taken to social media to issue a clear directive urging the townsfolk to desist from depositing mail in the familiar blue USPS collection boxes and instead, walk their envelopes and parcels directly to the post office. Boston 25 News reported that the department's statement came following multiple reports of a phishing scam playing out in the streets of Needham.
According to a Facebook post from Monday referenced by Boston 25 News, the thieves, who remain at large, have been utilizing keys to unlock over 25 mail collection boxes across Needham, thereby accessing and pilfering residents' mailed checks and sensitive correspondence. Alarmed by the situation, a local resident, Martha Weiss, expressed her dismay about the violation saying, "It’s very disturbing and upsetting. It never occurred to me that that kind of a thing would happen."
The issue has been compounded by the involvement of organized crime rings engaging in the theft and subsequent trade of stolen checks, resulting in an extensive and sophisticated operation. David Maimon, a Georgia State University criminologist, elaborated on the modus operandi of such groups in an interview last September. Maimon revealed a troubling insight to Boston 25 News, stating, "It’s not a group of adolescents stealing your mail we’re talking organized crime groups who at the end of the day know exactly what they’re doing."
Concerns were elevated when master keys, also known as "arrow keys," were reportedly targeted in a spree of USPS employee robberies, compounding the security concerns for local postal services. After uncovering evidence of the phishing operations at certain locations, like the one on Great Plain Avenue, the police are doubling down on their pleas to the public to mitigate risk. A warning had been issued in July before, underscoring the gravity of the recurring issues. Police have advised citizens who used the outdoor mailboxes to keep a vigilant eye on their bank accounts and contact Needham Police at 781-455-7570 for assistance if needed, as detailed in the report by WCVB.
Furthermore, the police department recommends those affected places stop payments on any checks that do not reach their intended recipients. With the volume of valuable mail at stake, Laura Petrie, a resident, has taken to caution. "I know that this has been going on so we need to be careful what we put through the mail slots outside. So, I go inside," Petrie explained to Boston 25 News. With the persistence of these crimes, Needham locals are being pushed to rethink how they engage with a service that has always been as mundane and necessary as the mailbox itself.
