North Austin just got a little bit roomier for folks feeling the pinch of the city's housing boom. The NRP Group and local officials cut the ribbon on The James on Grand Avenue, a new affordable housing community designed to ease some of that crush. According to a Business Wire report, the project offers 275 units for families earning up to 60% of the area's median income.

It's not just about a roof over one's head, though. The development boasts amenities typically found in swankier digs. We're talking about a resort-style pool, a fitness center, and even after-school programs for kids to safely hang out and get help with homework. All these, as Maxwell Whipple, Vice President of Development at The NRP Group told KXAN, are part of the plan to "to provide tenants an affordable place to live without sacrificing high quality."

And with the city growing faster than just about anywhere, a spot like The James on Grand Avenue puts residents near job hubs and a top-rated school district, per Business Wire. Drawn to the Domain's shopping and lifestyle center, and the tech campuses of Apple and Dell, families living here get to plug directly into the heart of Austin's economic surge.

It's a stepping-stone setup that extends beyond basic housing needs. "We want this to be a stepping stone for future success," Whipple explained in the KXAN interview, outlining plans for programs in financial literacy and home-buying to help residents eventually move on to market-rate housing or own homes.

For local leaders like Williamson County Commissioner Terry Cook, The James on Grand Avenue represents a piece of a larger solution. As she attended the grand opening, Cook reflected on the county's high demand for affordable housing, with backlogs in existing waitlists. "Affordable housing is absolutely critical to being able at the end of the month to know that I get to stay because ‘I can afford where I’m living,'" she said in the KXAN coverage.

Developer NRP Group, recognized nationally for its efforts in housing development, is banking on The James on Grand Avenue to set a standard in affordable living. With tenants already filing in since December, the community is on track to be fully occupied by March.
