New Bedford narcotics detectives capped a significant drug bust last week, hauling in a man from the North End with a substantial haul of the deadly opioid fentanyl. According to local authorities, New Bedford resident Ricardo Cruz De Los Santos, 41, was apprehended and charged with trafficking over 200 grams of the substance.
As reported on the official Facebook page of the New Bedford Police Department, the arrest followed the conclusion of a meticulous investigation led by Det. Matthew Sylvia of the Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau targeting the distribution ring operating out of a North Front Street residence. Approximately 428 grams of fentanyl were found in the tenant's first-floor apartment, along with evidence of drug trafficking activities on January 5th.
Authorities executed the search warrant in the early afternoon. Apart from the fentanyl, digital scales and materials used in packaging, and the distribution of narcotics, an amount of $1,377 in cash was also found and seized due to the illicit nature of the operation. This sizable bust underscores the ongoing battle law enforcement faces in stemming the tide of fentanyl, a drug that has become a scourge across America due to its potency and the ease with which it can cause overdose deaths.
The arrest of Cruz De Los Santos marked a strategic strike in the fight against drug trafficking, one which cuts a supply line potentially responsible for countless addictions and related fatalities.
