The East Village just got a little safer this week, as Fire Station No. 4 welcomed a new member to its team—an additional fire engine that will be aiding with the high demand for emergency responses in the bustling downtown area. District 3 Councilmember Stephen Whitburn and San Diego Fire-Rescue Chief Colin Stowell spearheaded the announcement of the arrival of Fire Truck 80, aimed to offer reprieve to the venerable firehouse that has been running non-stop with a single engine.
According to a report by FOX 5 San Diego, the new engine will be operational during peak hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., as a part of a one-year trial period to gauge its effectiveness. Whitburn highlighted the growth of East Village and expressed confidence that “the addition of the second fire engine will help to ensure that we have quick response times to emergencies that arise.” The move is looked to drastically improve the safety and response capabilities in a neighborhood that has seen its population—and emergencies—swell.
With the area being among the highest call volumes in the city, the new engine is a welcome relief to strained resources. The challenges faced due to high demand have often resulted in the crew at Fire Station No. 4 handling upwards of 26, 27 calls in a single shift—an unsustainable pace for even the most seasoned firefighters, Stowell noted. Previously, the station had to frequently request assistance from neighboring stations, which could dangerously prolong response times. “That is just too far for them to travel to get here in any kind of quick response time,” Stowell lamented.
In a post about the addition, Councilmember Whitburn emphasized the importance of the new engine to East Village residents, saying that it "means that people who experience an emergency will be able to get help quicker." The deployment of Engine 80 is indeed expected to significantly reduce the number of times additional resources need to be called upon from distant locations, helping to protect the growing neighborhood more effectively.
