A North Texas teenager who suffered burns on over 90% of her body is now responding to doctors' commands after being in a medically induced coma. Seventeen-year-old Madison Lewis of Jacksboro was injured in a horrific blaze caused by a gasoline explosion at a holiday gathering, according to FOX 4 News.
Following her most recent surgery, Madison's condition has shown some improvement. Her mother, Ericca Hammond, explained that at the time of the incident, her daughter was standing near a burn barrel when a pan filled with gasoline was thrown into the fire, leading to the explosion. "It was devastating. Completely burned her whole body," Hammond recounted. To seemingly improve her chances of recovery, doctors had placed Madison into a coma and performed multiple surgeries at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, as reported by MySanAntonio.
Madison's efforts to fight for her life became apparent when doctors took her off pain medication on Tuesday, January 2, to see if she would become responsive. Despite the severe injuries, she has started to show signs of responsiveness. "She was taken out of the coma by doctors and made some small movements with her tongue," her mother said. This is being seen as a positive step in what will likely be a long recovery process, as per FOX 4 News.
Even with these encouraging signs, concerns remain about Madison's health moving forward. One of the updates given by her doctors is particularly troubling. They suspect that she may have permanently lost function in her left eye. Despite the challenges ahead, the family remains hopeful as Madison was placed back into her medically-induced coma to allow her body to continue to heal.
