A Miami-Dade Police officer was hospitalized after a hit-and-run incident, which unfolded on the intersection of Coral Way and 72nd Avenue in Southwest Miami-Dade. The collision occurred yesterday evening and resulted in severe front-end damage to the police cruiser, as documented by CBS News Miami cameras at the scene.
The officer, who was off-duty at the time of the accident, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. The perpetrator of the hit-and-run, 32-year-old Yasmany Ulloa, initially fled the scene but was subsequently apprehended at his residence and has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, the police disclosed.
The suspect reportedly was speeding eastbound on Coral Way when he collided with the officer's vehicle. WSVN revealed that the driver continued eastbound after the crash, abandoned his vehicle in front of a business, and then fled on foot. A police helicopter was deployed to assist in the manhunt, which also prompted the evacuation of a nearby park where children were present.
Officers were able to track down Ulloa after inspecting the abandoned vehicle and retrieving the registration. They then proceeded to the address linked to the vehicle's registration. Police activity and the subsequent investigation caused traffic disruptions in the local area, as officers established a perimeter during the evening. The swift actions of law enforcement led to the suspect's arrest before 11:15 p.m., as confirmed by the investigators.
