In a fiery incident in Palm Springs, Fla., a car plowed into a gas station fuel pump and ignited a blaze on Wednesday afternoon. The crash, which was reported around 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of 10th Avenue North and Kirk Road, sent firefighters racing to the scene to confront the flames, as WPTV reported.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue officials stated that upon the response team's arrival, they discovered the vehicle, that had collided with the fuel pump, Tom Reyes, PBCFR spokesman, noted in a news release. The in-built safety mechanisms of the fuel pump engaged effectively, stopping the gasoline flow and preventing a potentially larger disaster. "The pump motion-activated safety shutoff worked as designed," Reyes said in a release obtained by WPTV.
Despite this swift intervention, residual fuel in the gas line was set ablaze, producing dark smoke and visible flames. The PBCFR team quickly launched an "overwhelming fire attack" that subdued the fire in less than sixty seconds, as per the statement acquired from WPTV. Reyes assured the public, saying, "An 'overwhelming fire attack' brought the fire under control in less than one minute from arrival."
Remarkably, no further fuel was spilled during this incident, and the situation was stabilized without additional risks to the infrastructure or the public. The driver involved in the crash was examined on-site by emergency personnel and declined further medical care, law enforcement and PBCFR then took over the investigation to piece together the circumstances of the crash, as reported by CBS12. Following the extinguishing of the fire, PBCFR confirmed, "The scene was turned over to law enforcement for investigation," according to the CBS12 article.
