Palo Alto's Country Sun Natural Foods Rescued From Closure by Anonymous Local BuyersSource: Google Street View

In a turn of events, a Palo Alto grocery store, Country Sun Natural Foods, has been saved from the brink of closure thanks to the actions of two anonymous customers. The local market known for its organic produce and healthy offerings, which opened its doors back in the 1970s, was facing a shutdown due to decreasing sales and changes in shopping patterns. The purchase was completed in mid-December after the store had started to empty its shelves in preparation for a permanent closure.

Despite the grim forecast for the store's future, the anonymous Palo Alto residents devised a plan to keep the grocery store running. As confirmed in a Palo Alto Online interview, the duo pooled resources. It sought advice from successful local businesses like Dandelion Chocolate and even secured a reduced rent agreement with the new building owner, Radiate Hospitality. This strategic move, facilitated by heartfelt negotiations, has ensured that Country Sun can continue operating on California Avenue.

The legacy of Country Sun dates back to its inception as Earth Sign Natural Foods, and it's been stable in the California Avenue area since relocating there in 1980. Kevin Wright, a longtime employee and vitamin buyer for the store, expressed his and the team’s profound relief, saying, "Someone from the community came through and saved the day in the last hour," in a statement obtained by Palo Alto Online. Wright revealed that the new owners are no strangers to the establishment and that their attachment to the store drove them to take action.

While the deal was not sealed until mid-December, the store had already conveyed a positive message of a comeback on its social media with a post stating, "It'll take us a while to get back to normal and fill our shelves again!" as per a Facebook announcement. Under the new ownership, the store plans to maintain its identity and offerings that have long made it a favorite among locals, including organic produce, gluten-free, and grain-free options and a varied selection for vitamins and dietary supplements.

As reported by SF Eater, former CEO Scott Otte has moved on from Country Sun, and a new leadership team is being discussed. The intent is to enhance community engagement and secure the store's place as a cornerstone on California Avenue. According to Wright, the employees are excited and motivated for the upcoming phase and are eager to "reconnect with the community and become a bigger part of California Avenue."
