A flight destined for Bozeman, Montana from Dallas descended into chaos when a passenger assaulted a flight attendant, prompting an emergency landing. The American Airlines flight 1497 had to be diverted to Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport on Wednesday after Keith Edward Fagiana became unruly and struck a male flight attendant.
Caught on cell phone video by Taylor Aguirre, who was also aboard the disrupted flight, the confrontation began when Fagiana was asked to refrain from kicking the seat in front of him. Aguirre filmed the incident, showing the aggravating passenger cursing and pummeling the flight crew member. "Stop, stop, stop, stop. What the [expletive] are you doing?" the assaulted flight attendant is heard demanding, as per CBS News.
The intervention didn't end with verbal commands. Several passengers, stepping in, helped subdue Fagiana until flight attendants could apply restraints. Law enforcement awaited the landed plane and arrested Fagiana, effectively putting an end to the mid-flight threat. He now faces federal charges for interference with a flight crew, a serious offense that may lead to a 20-year sentence in jail.
"I think it's very scary for other people, other passengers on the plane, just because, you know, if people are willing to escalate that far, you never know where they're going to take it next," Aguirre said. While American Airlines has stated full cooperation with the ongoing investigation, the airline affirmed that violence is never tolerated on its aircraft, according to CBS News.
In 2023 alone, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported a sobering tally of over 2,000 unruly passenger incidents. "This violent behavior must stop," the Association of Professional Flight Attendants declared. They emphasized the need for continued collaboration with various governing bodies to ensure perpetrators face stiff penalties, including potential flying bans, as cited by FOX 4 News.
