Two Peoria students are making waves with their tech-savvy brains, having bagged a win for their innovative app designed to teach kids the ABCs of personal finance. Om Bankar and Aayush Abhilash, students at BASIS Peoria, have earned top honors in the 2023 Congressional App Challenge for Arizona's 8th Congressional District with their app, FinEdForKids, as Congresswoman Debbie Lesko's office announced.
Their creation aims to pave the way for youngsters to navigate the complexities of fiscal responsibility, starting with the basics and escalating up to more intricate lessons. Tthis effort was recognized when their FinEdForKids app clinched the coveted spot in the prestigious annual STEM competition, designed to propel students to sink their teeth into coding and computer sciences, as ABC15 reported.
"FinEdForKids is a commonsense app that will hopefully educate children of all ages on how to use and save their money for the future," Lesko praised the winners in a statement, adding, "It is an honor to represent so many bright students, and it is wonderful to see them using their talents and creativity through these apps to help others!" The application's blend of engagement and education will soon be showcased in the U.S. Capitol, an honor shared with other victorious apps from across the nation.
The ingenuity didn't end with just one app though, as Nathan Narrik of Deer Valley High School took second place for his eco-friendly app, The Arizona Clothing Line, calculating the potential carbon emission reductions from air-drying clothes alongside the wait time affected by Arizona's sunny skies and Genesis Carrillo, Kenna Yoshimura, and Martin Shepard, also from Deer Valley High School, snagged third with their Sole Foods app, a search engine to churn out healthy recipes based on single ingredients, according to Congresswoman Lesko's website.
