A man was stabbed early Monday morning in South Phoenix and suffered life-threatening injuries, and the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, leaving police searching for a man believed to have carried out the attack. First responders were called to a report of an injured person near 21st Street and Broadway Road, where they found the victim seriously hurt and rushed him to a hospital.
Phoenix police say the suspect is believed to be another man who ran off before officers could reach the location, according to Arizona's Family. The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrest has been announced. It is not yet known what led to the stabbing or whether the victim and suspect knew each other, and those questions remain open as detectives continue to piece together what happened.
A Corridor With a Troubled History
The intersection falls within the jurisdiction of the Phoenix Police Department's South Mountain Precinct, which provides round-the-clock patrol coverage across 115 square miles from its station on West Southern Avenue. Hoodline reported last week on a heavy police response at this same intersection, which has seen deadly incidents before. In May, a 73-year-old man in a wheelchair, identified by police as Ignacio Ramos Duarte, was struck and killed by a vehicle at 21st Street and Broadway Road, according to KTAR. Back in May 2024, a 57-year-old motorcyclist died in a collision at the same crossroads, a crash that shut down the road for hours, as reported by the Arizona Daily Independent.
This is not the first fatal stabbing to rattle South Phoenix's transit corridors. In April 2024, Hoodline reported that a man died after being stabbed at a South Phoenix bus stop, prompting detectives to launch a public appeal for witnesses. Whether surveillance footage from nearby businesses or transit points might help identify the suspect in Monday's attack is still unclear.
Staffing Strains Amid a Citywide Decline in Violence
Citywide, Phoenix has actually seen violent crime trend downward in recent years. Phoenix homicides dropped to roughly 151 in 2024, a 32 percent decline from the city's 2022 peak of 223 homicides, according to Omnilert. Even so, the department has been operating with more than 500 officer vacancies against an authorized force of about 3,125, with Priority 1 emergency response times averaging six to nine minutes, per the same data.
The South Mountain Precinct has also faced scrutiny of its own this month. Two of its patrol officers were fired and arrested on charges of aggravated assault and kidnapping tied to an unreported August 5 traffic stop near 19th Avenue and Broadway Road, roughly two miles west of Monday's stabbing, according to ABC15 Arizona.
