A tense scene unfolded in Phoenix last week when a man was accused of leaving an explosive device on a Valley Metro light rail platform, leading to his arrest on weapon charges. In the late hours of January 23, police were dispatched to the area near 24th and Jefferson streets following a report of an explosive device spotted under a bench on the train platform, as per Chartier Medias.
Upon arrival, authorities found a suspicious assembly of cardboard tubes, secured together with tape, featuring what appeared to be a green fuse. The unsettling discovery prompted a full evacuation of the premises and the suspension of westbound light rail service at 38th Street, causing, considerable disruption to commuters and city transit operations.
Phoenix police's bomb squad, summoned to the site, determined that the contraption was indeed a potentially dangerous explosive device and subsequently removed it, allowing services to resume approximately three hours later. The incident led to an investigation where facial recognition technology played a pivotal role in identifying a suspect.
Luis Arrano, 20, was taken into custody following the incident. He reportedly admitted to authorities that he had removed, a bunch of fireworks from his backpack and deliberately left them on the platform. As reported by ABC15 Arizona, Luis is facing a felony charge of disorderly conduct with a weapon.
The reckless act not only placed public safety in jeopardy but also caused substantial inconvenience and unrest among Phoenix's commuting public. Luis Arrano is currently awaiting further legal proceedings in connection to the charges brought against him.
