Portland's city government is shacking up in a temporary location as City Hall gets a facelift. The Portland City Council has transitioned to a makeshift council chamber at the City’s Development Services Building, as of this week. Meetings and work sessions will be conducted at 1900 SW 4th Ave., Room 2500, where the public can now participate in the civic process in person, officials announced.
The temporary move is expected to last through the end of the year or until the City Hall renovations are complete, whichever comes first. The relocation underscores the city's commitment to accessibility and transparency, giving locals the chance to attend council sessions and become engaged in Portland's governance, all against the backdrop of construction tape and drywall.
For those Portlanders who've felt distant from the political heartbeat during renovations, the council's interim abode offers a renewed connection. "Community members are welcome once again to attend council sessions in-person at this location through the end of the year or until renovations in City Hall are completed," the city's transition team pledged.
As the City Hall's storied halls undergo a much-needed overhaul, the Development Services Building will serve as a hub of municipal activity. Elected officials and public servants will deliberate, decide, and discuss pressing city matters all while the echoes of City Hall's revamp whisper in the distance. It's business as usual for the Portland City Council, just in a different zip code for the time being.
