A shocking event transpired on a California freeway when a pregnant woman was injured by a football-sized rock thrown from an overpass. According to San Diego CITD, the incident took place on the morning of Sunday in Oceanside as the victim's car traveled south on Interstate 5.
The victim, seated in the front of the car, was struck by the rock after it smashed through the windshield. Remarkably, an off-duty Oceanside police officer was driving directly behind, witnessing the horrifying event unfold. The officer furnished a suspect description to the authorities, said police. Despite her injuries, the unborn child seemed to be unharmed; the woman was taken to the hospital, where her injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.
Swift action by law enforcement led to the apprehension of the alleged assailant, David Avalos. Found in a nearby canyon thanks to video surveillance utilized during the investigation efforts, Avalos was arrested without incident. The Times of San Diego reports that he now faces charges including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and throwing an object at a vehicle with injury.
The department urges anyone holding additional information to contact Detective Jeff Vandenburgh at 760-435-4237. Meanwhile, Avalos awaits his day in court from behind bars at Vista Detention Facility.
