President Joe Biden honored the life and legacy of late Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson by attending a memorial service in Dallas on Monday. The formidable lawmaker, known as the first African American woman to serve in the Texas State Senate since Reconstruction, passed away on New Year’s Eve at the seasoned age of 89. Biden, who recently arrived in Dallas for the service, paid his respects to Johnson, whose influence stretched far beyond Texas.
Mourners gathered at Concord Church were met with the President's solemn tribute as he paused in front of Johnson's casket and shared a few private words with her family. The public viewing of Johnson's body was held at Fair Park earlier on Monday, with various elected officials in attendance to express their admiration for a woman who paved the way in Texas politics, according to FOX 4 News.
Celebrated for her relentless advocacy and a career rich with 'firsts', Johnson’s tenure included becoming the first registered nurse elected to both the Texas House in 1972 and the Texas Senate in 1986. Her 30-year stronghold in the U.S. House saw her as not only a Congresswoman but as a nurse committed to the health and well-being of her constituents—shaping policies and securing federal funding vital for the Dallas area, as per NBC DFW.
Her legacy extends to her influential roles as the first Black woman to chair the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and as a leader within the Congressional Black Caucus. Despite the profound loss, her impact endures through the generations of public servants she mentored—a resonance President Biden refers to as "immense courage" and emblematic of a woman whose "iconic" presence will be felt long after her passing, as cited by NBC DFW.
The services for Johnson, which commenced with her lying in state, will conclude in Austin at the Texas State Cemetery. Meanwhile, the family of the late Congresswoman is engaged in discussions with Baylor Scott & White regarding allegations of medical neglect that the family claims led to her death, adding a layer of solemnity and contention amidst the commemorations. Johnson's staunch advocacy and indefatigable spirit will be remembered as mourners say their goodbyes during the final graveside service on Wednesday afternoon.
