A 31-year-old Providence woman has been arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run that occurred on New Year's Eve. The Providence Police have charged Ariel Acosta with a count of hit-and-run, Death Resulting, following the incident that ultimately claimed the life of 57-year-old Edwin English. Authorities detailed that the tragic event unfolded in the area of North Main Street and Rochambeau Avenue, as reported by WPRI.
Responding officers found English suffering from critical injuries on the evening of Dec. 31 after allegedly being struck by an SUV driven by Acosta. Having succumbed to his injuries on January 9 after being taken to a local hospital, English's demise has been a puzzle that police have been meticulously piecing together. According to NBC10 Boston affiliate WJAR, police responded to the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. to attend to the victim.
While prosecutors have started their pursuit of justice for English, it is suggested by the Providence Police that Acosta may face additional charges about the incident. This statement, hinting at a broader scope of legal woes for the accused, was confirmed by local outlet Turn to 10. The case is still open and under investigation.
Colonel Oscar Perez of the Providence Police Department expressed a poignant sentiment amid the ongoing case “I hope that the apprehension of the suspect responsible for this crime can bring some sense of closure to the victim’s family, knowing that the suspect will be held accountable for her actions,” as obtained by WPRI. Acosta is due in court for arraignment on Tuesday.
