UPDATE: The community of Queen Creek is reeling after the recent violent death of 16-year-old Preston Lord, who suffered a fatal assault following a teen party gone awry, as detailed in a report from ABC15. The unsettling incident, which took place on October 28, 2023, in a normally peaceful local neighborhood, has prompted a serious discussion among town officials about the burgeoning "takeover" trend - where large groups of teens congregate rapidly via social media, often leading to chaos and violence.
The Queen Creek Police Department, while investigating the case deemed a homicide, has not made any arrests yet and is actively seeking video footage from the public that might shed light on the circumstances of the young man's death. Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice revealed these rash, unsupervised gatherings have been on the rise and have evolved from small get-togethers to hundreds of youths converging on one spot in an instant, this trend was noticed about a year ago, the assault cases involving these teen mobs are currently under review by the police.
As reported by ABC15, Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley posed a poignant question at a community meeting: "Where are we going wrong as a society - as parents - taking ownership, taking accountability that something is severely fractured?" In response to the disturbing trend, Wheatley, alongside law enforcement, is spearheading initiatives to offer more structured, safer environments, including new park and recreation center constructions, as well as the formation of a youth advisory council.
Addressing public concerns and the need for curbing such disruptive gatherings, Chief Brice explained the measures being taken to mitigate the issue, stating, "A couple of weeks ago, my Intel group and my officers discovered a party that was posted online that it was at the house, we went over there, and the parent had no idea it had been posted on social media." The department is also stepping up its social media presence to thwart these takeovers before they start, while Mayor Wheatley has supported additional resources for increased patrols.
J.O. Combs Unified School District, mourning the loss of one of their students, provided a statement expressing their devastation and commitment to support the family and student body, "We are devastated to learn of the sudden loss of a beloved Combs High School student. At this time, our district remains focused on supporting the family members, students, and school communities impacted by this tragedy,” according to a statement provided in the wake of the incident.
