FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A tornado terrorized parts of Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, as captured in gripping footage taken by residents and shared across social media platforms. The twister, which garnered multiple views from different vantage points, emerged from overcast skies before touching down near the bustling intersection of Federal Highway and Las Olas Boulevard, confirmed by the reports from Local 10 and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.
The whirlwind made landfall just before the evening rush at around 6 p.m., bringing with it a display of power flashes and formidable winds. According to sightings and radar data, the National Weather Service issued a tornado alert at approximately 5:45 p.m., as shared by The Daily Mail. With the tempest quickly moving east toward the ocean after causing a stir with structures, power lines, and marine vessels, no injuries were reported a of Saturday evening.
Despite the tornado's ferocity depicted in the visual cuts, the aftermath in Fort Lauderdale seemingly escaped any wholesale devastation. Trees bore the majority of the storm's wrath, with a Local 10 News crew reporting minor damage on the ground. Fire rescue teams, deployed in the tornado's wake, echoed this sentiment, stating their preliminary assessments suggested impacts that were less than catastrophic.
Videos circulating on social media show the tornado's progression across Fort Lauderdale Beach, the swirling vortex crossing over water before dissipating harmlessly at sea. Residents shared experiences of the event, with one Local 10 viewer recounting the sight of a bowed fence, a downed powerline, and an uprooted tree on Southeast 25th Avenue. Despite this localized turmoil, Fort Lauderdale officials urge caution, advising people to watch for debris and downed power lines that still pose risks in the aftermath.
Mayor Dean Trantalis took to Instagram to share his personal encounter with the tornado, revealing that his own boat had suffered damages.
