Boston residents were rocked by a series of underground explosions that tore through the Fenway–Kenmore neighborhood, damaging vehicles and leaving local buildings without power earlier today. Eversource, the area's energy provider, confirmed that at least two manhole explosions occurred on St. Stephen Street, not far from Northeastern University. The utility company was quick to respond, with their spokesperson stating, "Our crews are responding to an underground issue involving two manholes," in a statement obtained by Boston 25 News.
Witnesses recalled the startling incidents with one local, Kerem Vasoglu, recounting to WCVB his experience: "I was in the shower, and I heard a big explosion and some car alarms go off. And then 10 minutes later, I was getting dressed, and then the same thing happened." This statement encapsulates the confusion and surprise among the community, as emergency services rushed to the scene. The impact was significant enough to require Northeastern University to move its dining services from the Stetson East building to International Village, as power outages affected local infrastructure.
Authorities were quick to secure the area, with Boston Police confirming their response to the manhole explosions and cautioning motorists to avoid the vicinity. According to 7NEWS, the aftermath of the explosions left asphalt and other debris strewn across the road, while police cordoned off the area with yellow tape. No injuries have been reported, offering a glimmer of relief amidst the chaos caused by the blasts.
Eversource has cited the recent substantial rainfall as a likely contributing factor to the underground explosions. However, the exact cause remains under investigation, as teams worked into the day to restore power and assess the damage. Generators were being brought in to aid power restoration efforts for affected buildings, Eversource conveyed in comments to local media. Despite the inconveniences and disruptions, efforts are underway to return a sense of normalcy to the shaken Boston community.
