A violent episode that took place on Florida's Space Coast at a birthday party on Sunday left four people dead, including a retired priest, his sister, and the gunman, as reported by NBC Miami. The Palm Bay Police Department confirmed that the suspect, 24-year-old Brandon Kapas, engaged officers in a shootout after a family disturbance, which resulted in two wounded officers and the death of Kapas' grandfather, William Kapas.
Authorities said that after fleeing the initial scene, Kapas shot and killed his grandfather, who was reportedly trying to calm him down. The deadly chain of events continued, as police say, they later found Robert Hoeffner, a retired priest of the St. Joseph Catholic Community, and his sister Sally Hoeffner, shot dead in their home. The officers involved in the ordeal were identified as Stephen Ball and Nicholas Franze, who suffered injuries but are expected to recover, according to FOX 35 Orlando.
The incident began when officers responded to a 911 call about a disruptive Kapas at the birthday party, as he was allegedly being destructive and armed. A relative warned the police that Kapas was dangerous, which led to the police's attempt to subdue him with a Taser, sparking the violent encounter. Kapas then broke free, leading to the shootout. Detectives later uncovered what they described as an arsenal inside Kapas' vehicle, with multiple rifles, and handguns raising questions regarding his motives and the arsenal's intended use. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation due to the officer-involved shooting, monitors NBC Miami.
FOX 35 Orlando reports that the Hoeffners' deaths have left the local community reeling, with Saint Joseph's Minister to the Sick, Chrissy Kruppenbach mourning, "It's all senseless, it all hurts." The Diocese of Orlando expressed condolences, noting Father Hoeffner's decades of compassionate service. Marissa Redmond, a former parishioner, reflected on Father Hoeffner's impact, stating, "My heart aches for the community of Palm Bay, and the families and friends that are without a doubt trying to make sense of this tragic act of violence. Father Bob was, and will continue to be, a pillar of the Palm Bay community. He was an exemplary priest of the Catholic faith who led his parish with kindness, compassion & patience. Father Bob’s words and guidance will continue to live on in us all. He is mourned & greatly missed by many. May God bless & keep the PBPD officers recovering from their injuries, and the families suffering losses in the wake of this tragedy."
The investigation continues.
