A Texas man has accepted responsibility for the brutal New Year's Day slaying of his 8-year-old grandson, officials said. Phillip Hughes, 63, of Richland Hills, entered a guilty plea for the murder of young Brenym McDonald, and as a part of a plea agreement, he will spend 35 years behind bars, as per the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office. The district attorney's release, as reported by The Dallas Morning News, came out on Monday.
Police were summoned to a house on Labadie Drive around 7:50 a.m. on January 1, where they tragically found Brenym's lifeless body with sharp force wounds to the neck and chest. The boy's great-grandmother said that he, along with his parents, had been temporarily staying with Hughes. In what appears to be a domestic horror, Hughes was arrested shortly after the incident and captured barely a block away from the crime scene.
Details about the slaying indicated a sharp-edged weapon was found near the boy, and Richland Hills Police quickly connected the evidence to Hughes, who has been in custody ever since the murder. "There is true evil in this world, and our community has experienced this with Brenym’s death," said Richland Hills Police Chief Kimberly Sylvester, as per The Dallas Morning News.
Brenym McDonald is remembered as a bright spirit with a passion for drawing. The Birdville Independent School District student was described on a GoFundMe page, established to help defray his funeral expenses, as "smart, enthusiastic, always smiling with the biggest heart. There wasn’t a single room he couldn’t light up with his smile, or a story he couldn’t tell you that would make you laugh." This heartfelt reflection on a young life tragically cut short was shared by a family friend, according to The Dallas Morning News.
The resolution of the court case brings some closure to the grieving family, even as they continue to grapple with the unparalleled loss of Brenym. Hughes' guilty plea and subsequent sentence were reportedly accepted by the boy's mother, as cited by FOX 4 News.
