The streets of Richmond rang with the echo of gunshots and the rev of stolen engines this past week, according to the Richmond Police Department's latest report. In a series of incidents that reflect the perpetual fight to maintain order, officers were dispatched to multiple ShotSpotter activations and vehicle thefts, showcasing both the technology's use in modern policing and the enduring challenge of crime in the community.

On January 11, patrolling officers, alerted by ShotSpotter, hurried to the 900 block of 7th St, finding numerous bullet casings but neither victims nor damaged property. The same day, officers confronted a more sinister scenario in the 3000 block of McBryde St, where a suspect brandished and discharged a firearm before holing up in his residence. In a statement highlighted by the Richmond Police Department, "after several announcements, the suspect emerged from his residence and was safely detained." A firearm was found inside the suspect's home and he was hit with various weapons-related charges.

Vehicle thefts were also rampant. On January 12, Richmond Police reported a city vehicle stolen and later reclaimed after the original driver spotted it. After an area check turned up nothing earlier, the vehicle was later found occupied on San Pablo Ave, leading to the suspect's arrest and the vehicle's recovery. Separately on the same day, a stolen vehicle triggered a Flock notification, leading to a pursuit that ended when the suspect crashed the car, bolted on foot, but was ultimately sniffed out by K9 Stark hiding in foliage.

Shooting incidents continued to disrupt the peace. An investigation is ongoing after a January 12 ShotSpotter activation on Carlson and Potrero, where a vehicle was struck by gunfire, leaving its occupants shaken but unscathed. The subsequent day, gunfire wounded a victim within the sanctuary of their home on Chanslor Ave. "The victim was provided medical attention on scene before being transported to a local hospital in stable condition," detailed the Richmond PD's account of the affair.

The week's crime log wrapped on January 14 with a robbery cum DUI incident. After trailing the victim from a store to the 600 block of 7th St, two suspects engaged in physical assault and robbery, only to be captured by officers soon after. According to the Richmond Police Department, the crooks’ vehicle yielded the stolen wallet upon inspection, and both suspects were nabbed without further incident.
