In a display of medical proficiency mingled with musical dedication, a guitarist in South Florida has pulled off an astonishing feat - strumming the Deftones on his guitar while his brain was being operated on. According to Miami's WSVN, Christian Nolen underwent a unique surgery known as an awake craniotomy at the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, which prides itself on conducting the most operations of its kind in the country.
While doctors, nurses, and techs worked meticulously on Nolen's brain, he was awake and deftly attempting to play guitar during the crucial parts of the two-hour procedure. "It was just like out of this world, like, to just like wake up and like have people actively working inside of your head. It's kind of an insane feeling," Nolen conveyed in a statement obtained by WSVN.
Nolen made it to the operating table after an incident during a show left him without feeling in his left side. Following the loss of sensation, his care fell to Dr. Ricardo Komotar, a neurosurgeon at the helm of the comprehensive Brain Tumor Program at the University of Miami. "These types of tumors, if you don't have the ability to remove the tumor with the patient awake, actually become much more dangerous," Komotar told WSVN.
The reason behind Nolen playing guitar during his operation was to enable surgeons to precisely monitor vital brain functions in real-time. Dr. Komotar elaborated that "Having the patient awake and playing guitar while we take out the tumor allows us to be as aggressive as possible, yet still maintain his quality of life and his manual dexterity" – a statement highlighted by BNN Breaking. Komotar also emphasized the collaborative nature of the surgery, crediting neuroanesthesiologists, nurses, techs, and other medical staff for the procedure's success.
The successful operation allowed Nolen to swiftly return not just to his music but to his active lifestyle as well. Reflecting on his recovery, Nolen remarked to WSVN, "Being able to go to the gym and be active again, which is a big part of my life. It's been very amazing, like, the recovery." Though his healing process continues with further treatments and therapy, Nolen’s experience stands as a triumph of modern medicine's capability to mesh with human perseverance and talent.
