San Antonio police made a gruesome discovery as an elderly man was found dead and his wife left battling for her life. Their 45-year-old son allegedly perpetrated a violent assault using a ceramic bowl in their northwest-side apartment. The incident came to light after a home health care agency requested a welfare check when the couple missed a routine visit and didn't respond to phone calls or the door, according to KENS 5.
Maintenance intervention allowed authorities to access the apartment, where they found the 85-year-old man deceased in the hallway. His 73-year-old wife was severely injured, showing signs of head trauma and fractures, with her face bloodied. The Messenger report states that the tragic attack allegedly occurred nearly 20 hours before the authorities discovered the victims. The elderly woman, rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, informed officers that it was their son who had attacked them.
The couple's son, found by the police playing video games in another room of the apartment as if he was removed from the grim scene that unfolded, has been taken into custody, now facing murder and aggravated assault charges. He is believed to have mental health issues, a detail that surfaced during the preliminary investigation. In the aftermath, officers came upon a broken and bloodstained ceramic bow, the alleged weapon used in the horrifying assault.
As the San Antonio Police Department continues its investigation into what appears to be a tragic domestic incident, the local community reels from such an alarming act of violence within the sanctuary of home.
