A San José man has been put in cuffs after the wool was lifted from the eyes of the local bomb squad. Following an intensive investigation, the San José Police Department (SJPD) announced on Wednesday the arrest of 33-year-old Andres Navarro for possession of explosives near the home of an unnamed elected official.
The jigsaw of this case began to piece slowly together when law enforcement was tipped off about a suspicious device found on June 14, 2022. The discovery at Delmas Avenue and Coe Avenue was no mere trinket; the SJPD Bomb Squad confirmed it to be a live homemade explosive primed for destruction. It was hardly orthodox, but the squad neutralized the threat and locked it away as evidence.
Diligent work by the SJPD Assaults Unit Detectives eventually pointed them squarely at Navarro. With enough puzzle pieces to see the image, they secured an arrest warrant in January, and Navarro was picked up without fanfare by the SJPD Covert Response Unit on January 16. His San José digs were promptly ransacked by investigators, unearthing a field guide for DIY explosives amongst his belongings.
The SJPD is keen to stress the investigation remains squarely open, and is hankering for anyone with the skinny on similar dodgy dealings to come forward. Detective Gaarde #4560 of the San José Police Assaults Unit is the go-to man, reachable by the old email or a direct line, according to the SJPD press release.
