San Mateo's Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is bracing for temporarily shutting its parking facilities as the San Vicente Creek Bridge gears up for a much-needed facelift. Starting January 16, the primary and overflow parking lots will be off-limits for a span expected to be as long as ten days, according to an announcement from San Mateo County Government. The reserve has been reeling from last year's winter storm damage and is pushing forward with its recovery efforts. Amid the refurbishment, the ramp leading to the beach and tidepools remains out of commission, leaving only the staircase route open for beachgoers.
A damage assessment provided by Hoodline described the havoc wreaked by the storms: the ramp's destruction and the compromised bridge. The Reserve, a jewel for locals and visitors alike, has suffered a blow that challenges the ease with which nature's marvels are observed and enjoyed. Park officials have warned of the hazards, urging autumnal visitors to the staircase, the only access point to the beach, while navigating the slippery aftermath of the rain and high tides.
While construction is underway, the old bridge hangs in limbo, severed from service since being damaged by the 2023 winter wrath, as the San Mateo County Government reported. With safety fences in place, officials warn against bypassing the barrier.
In response to the reserve's fragile condition and the risks it poses, park officials have been insistent. They appeal to the public’s sense of preservation and self-preservation, calling for compliance with posted signs and barriers. Citing incidents from the past where visitors' indiscretions disturbed wildlife and inflicted damage upon themselves and the environment, they underscore the need for vigilance and responsible conduct.
