A Santa Rosa man was busted with a stolen handgun and meth during a routine traffic stop, police said Tuesday.

Michael Ashcraft, 47, was pulled over Monday night in the area of Olive Street and Poplar Street for a vehicle equipment violation, according to a Santa Rosa Police Department news release. An officer contacted Ashcraft, who turned out to be the driver and the only person in the car. Aside from the stop, Ashcraft was found to have two outstanding arrest warrants and was on active searchable probation from Sonoma County.

During a search of the vehicle, authorities uncovered an unloaded Kel Tec P3AT .380 caliber pistol hidden inside the steering column. They also found approximately 1.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Ashcraft, during his interaction with the police, admitted to having stolen the firearm, the release specified.

He was booked into the Sonoma County jail on several charges, including violation of probation, possession of methamphetamine, felon in possession of a firearm, and carrying a concealed firearm. "He was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County jail for two outstanding warrants, “PC 1203.2 - Probation violation, H&S 11377(a) - Possession of methamphetamine, PC 29800(a)(1) - Felon in possession of a firearm, PC 25850(c)(2) - Knowingly possess a stolen firearm and PC 25400(a)(1) - Carry a concealed firearm," the news release stated.
