The Seattle Police Department is actively seeking the public's assistance to identify suspects tied to a November blaze that wiped out a vacant building on Rainer Avenue South in the Mount Baker neighborhood, as reported by KOMO News. The fire, which erupted shortly after 6:30 p.m., is now under joint investigation by SPD arson detectives and the Seattle Fire Marshal's Office.

Surveillance footage released by SPD shows several individuals present during the early stages of the fire, which later required a sizable response from dozens of firefighters, one of whom was injured. Despite the video evidence, detectives have yet to successfully put a name to the faces and are asking anyone with information to come forward and contact the SPD's violent crimes tip line at 206-233-5000.

These investigations occur against a backdrop of similar incidents from the past year. On January 1, a significant fire mission had to be mounted to tackle a fire in a four-story vacant building in the First Hill neighborhood. In a statement obtained by KOMO News, Seattle Fire Department Chief Harold Scoggins noted that the building had notably been vacant since a fire the previous year, and that crews had been called to several fires at the same location since then.

Meanwhile, just a block away, a two-alarm fire ravaged another vacant building on the 4200 block of Rainier Ave S in the Columbia City neighborhood, as detailed by the Seattle Fire Department's Fireline. Firefighters struggled to gain entry to the building due to boarded up windows and doors, high heat, and heavy smoke, with the roof and portions of the front collapsing before they could to fully extinguish the blaze. It took more than 80 firefighters and multiple units to declare the fire under control by 9:11 p.m. The fire's cause, however, remains undetermined after the investigation.

The recent string of fires in vacant buildings has highlighted a persistent issue within the city, with property damage and risks to emergency responders climbing with each incident. Both the Seattle Police Department and Fire Department continue to work closely together to understand these events and to prevent any future occurrences that might again, endanger lives and property.
