The Shakopee community is in mourning following the death of 18-year-old high school student and athlete, Mikayla McCarvel, who succumbed to her injuries weeks after being involved in a car crash.
The accident took place on the evening of December 26, 2023. McCarvel was a passenger when her vehicle was struck at the intersection of Tintaocanku and Hergott Memorial Drive, she passed away on January 16 as reported by FOX9. Suffering from multiple injuries, including broken bones and a brain injury, her family stated her injuries were "too significant to overcome."
According to her family’s statements on the Caring Bridge website, McCarvel's legacy continues through organ donation, providing life-saving gifts to those on the transplant waiting list. On the ice, off the field, and within the musical ensembles, her absence is profoundly felt. The senior at Shakopee Senior High was not just a hockey player but also engaged in activities like soccer, played the saxophone, and piano, and had recently taken up guitar.
Following the tragic event, CBS News Minnesota reported that the Shakopee Public School is providing a crisis team to help students and faculty cope with the loss. The Shakopee girl's hockey team paid tribute to their late teammate in their first game since her passing, with a moment of silence that was marked by an emotional atmosphere as peers mourned together.
In addition to remembering McCarvel with a silent tribute, her fellow band members performed on the ice in remembrance of their friend. Lily Scheutz, another teen involved in the accident, shared, "She touched so many people with her big smile and heart," and assured that "Mikayla will always be part of us, forever, in our hearts," as reported by CBS News Minnesota. The Shakopee Youth Hockey Association is considering the establishment of a scholarship in honor of McCarvel’s spirited life and contributions.
