A chaotic scene unfolded at a Jack in the Box in Phoenix over the weekend when a shirtless man, denied service for his attire and behavior, launched a violent attack that left a manager and two police officers injured. The incident first spiraled out of control on Saturday afternoon at the fast-food joint located on McDowell Road, just east of 3rd Avenue, resulting in 22-year-old Kasai Ahmee Byrd being taken into custody, according to Arizona's Family.
Reports indicate that, after Byrd was given water he escalated the situation by hopping the counter and confronting employees. A manager's attempt to call 911 was met with force as Byrd snatched the phone away, upon overhearing the conversation with the operator. His aggression intensified, resulting in the punching and bodyslamming of the manager, Arizona's Family detailed the violent sequence of events. "My revenge is going to be killing this b****," Byrd allegedly proclaimed during the altercation.
The violence did not subside with the arrival of Phoenix police officers. Engaging in an attempt to quell the situation, one officer sustained a broken bone in her wrist after striking Byrd's face multiple times. Her colleague endured kicks to the leg while both struggled to arrest the assailant. After receiving medical treatment at a local hospital, Byrd now faces a slew of charges, including kidnapping and aggravated assault on an officer, as conveyed by Arizona's Family.
Witnesses and regular patrons like Michael Johnson were left disheartened by the incident, lamenting the state of affairs when everyday employees face such dangers. "It’s a wild world out there. It breaks my heart to see what’s going on in this world," said Johnson, who frequents the establishment at least five times a week, in an interview with Arizona's Family. Simultaneously, the manager involved is now on the mend at home, stating, "I’m glad he’s behind bars, so he can’t do it to somebody else," emphasizing a sense of relief following Byrd's arrest.
Meanwhile, a separate report by 12 News added that less lethal tools were deployed to secure the suspect, noted only that an officer was injured without detailing the extent of the injuries, and did not provide identities of those involved due to the ongoing investigation. The restaurant, providing a statement and underscoring their priority on safety, could not comment further given the open investigation.
