In a harrowing late-night incident, a Toyota Corolla barreled out of control on the I-80 westbound near the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge, wreaking havoc in the form of a major collision, authorities said. The car, failing to handle the Harrison Street off-ramp's curve, slammed into a nearby building causing significant damage, before its dramatic plunge to the road below. This was disclosed in a Facebook post by the California Highway Patrol San Francisco Area (CHP).
With an urgent response shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday, emergency crews found the severely battered vehicle straddling the left shoulder of the Sterling Street on-ramp, lodged against the edifice it had collided with. Miraculously, entangled amidst the wreckage, the driver, secured by the embrace of their seatbelt, awaited rescue. The CHP explained that after being extricated from the twisted metal, the individual was whisked away for treatment, their condition a veil of uncertainty.
The collision's exact cause remains a mystery, under active investigation by the CHP. However, what remains irrefutable is the seatbelt's role in shielding the driver from what could have easily been a fatal outcome.
